Years ago your only option for losing weight was to cut calories and jog ten miles each day. Now, people understand weight loss better and they have a variety of options to choose. Even with all of the options it can still be tough for people to control their eating or burn enough calories to maintain a healthy weight. Those who have experienced an ongoing struggle with being overweight may consider weight loss surgery. There are two main types of surgery from which to choose. Each of the options reduces the size of the patient’s stomach so less food is able to be eaten. Thousands of people every year undergo the surgery and the results are astonishing, but just because they have found a weight loss solution does not mean their body troubles are over. Drastic weight loss creates a variety of other issues that can take years to eliminate for example, losing weight at a rapid rate can cause sagging skin on a previously overweight body. Following a major weight loss, a person may need breast augmentation or tummy tuck to create a healthy body they love.

There are a number of side effects associated with weight loss surgery and the main one is the inability to ever overeat again. When a person is overweight, they can choose to reduce their calories or binge, and while they may feel ill after bingeing, the feeling passes. Following weight loss surgery, bingeing brings on sickness swift and harsh, eliminating the option of ever indulging again. Over time, the stomach may be stretched, but initially, eating a lot of food is not an option. While this helps with weight loss, it takes away the ability to ever enjoy a large meal without discomfort.

If a person has been overweight their entire life and they suddenly drop weight due to surgery, it may not lead to a sudden change in body image. Even though the physical part of a person changes, they may still be coping with emotional issues. Do not assume weight loss surgery is a panacea. You may still struggle with many of the body image issues that have always affected you, especially if your weight gain was due to emotional issues. Your physical health will improve, but you may have a long emotional road ahead of you.

Having a whole new body creates a new expense in your life. Your size and shape are going to change dramatically and you are going to need an entirely new wardrobe. While the idea of this may sound like a dream come true, it will still take time and money to learn to dress your new body.

Finally, it is important to understand weight loss surgery means committing to a whole new lifestyle. While you may have enjoyed family celebrations around the dinner table before, food will need to be a less important part of your life now. Prepare yourself for the life changes that lie ahead following weight loss surgery, emotionally and physically.
