The commonest health problems in pets are related to the skin. These problems can be acute, self-limiting or sometimes chronic; requiring life-time treatment. The most common causative factor of these diseases in dogs is infection due to bacteria or fungi. The commonly occurring skin diseases in pets are given below:

Ringworm: this infection occurs due to fungi. It is common in pets in shelters and those living in poor hygienic surroundings. It is more common in puppies than in adult dogs.

Acne: This problem occurs as a result of an obstruction in the hair follicles due to sebum. The skin becomes intensely red. Formation of blackheads and pustules is also a common sign of this disease. This disorder is more common in Doberman Pinschers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Great Danes. It usually affects dogs 3 months of age and older.

Skin Fold Pyoderma: this condition occurs as a result of rubbing of the skin folds against each other. It can also occur when the skin has cuts or wounds. This creates ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria. The skin becomes moist and gives off a foul odor. Infections in the skin folds occur in different forms. In some dog breeds, it occurs as face fold pyoderma and in some breeds, it occurs as vulvar fold pyoderma. Vulvar fold pyoderma is commonly seen in female dogs that are obese. In Bulldogs and Pugs, it usually occurs as tail fold pyoderma.

Juvenile Pyoderma: this is sometimes referred to as Puppy Strangles. It usually occurs in puppies that are 4 to 16 weeks of age. This disease can be highly contagious. It often affects many puppies in the same litter. Sudden swelling of the lips, the eyelids and the ear flaps is the most common symptom of this disease. There is rapid development of pustules and crusts on the skin along with patches of erosion. There can also be formation of multiple ulcers.
